I've Been Getting Lucky!

I've been on a bit of a losing streak for the past month or so, but my luck has finally changed! I've won several cool things over the past few days, and I just wanted to brag a little.

I'm very excited about winning a Kritter Kondo Deluxe, Kritter Kondo Konnector, and Shade Canopy in the "Lub My Box" photo contest at Kritters That Twitter.  This is a Kritter Kondo:

I'm really happy about winning this prize. Currently, none of my cats are allowed to go outside because I feel that it isn't safe... too many of my childhood pets were run over by cars. One of my cats, Cheeto, would love to go out- he was a street cat before we grabbed him, and he's always trying to sneak out the door. After the Kritter Kondo arrives, Cheeto will be able to enjoy spending time outside safely! Plus, this prize package is worth $330, making it the most valuable prize I've won so far. Thanks very much to Kritters that Twitter and all of the contest judges for choosing my picture of Cricket as the platinum paw winner :) Here's the pic in case anyone wants to see it:

I also won an awesome prize for my cats from Stretching the One Income Dollar. Check out this cute Kat Kabin:
I think it's adorable. Hopefully, at least one of my creatures will opt to sleep in this rather than in random boxes or on top of my clean laundry. It's retail value is $99. Thank you, Monique!

It might seem like my poor dog is getting left out, but don't feel sorry for her! I've won not one, but three, doggie prizes within the past few days.
  • 3 1/2 lb tub of IN Supplements for Dogs from Doggies and Stuff. These supplements should help to keep my dog's coat soft and shiny. ($28 value)
  • 2 bags of Bocce's Bakery dog biscuits from Barkzilla, which I'm sure she'll love.  ($19 value)
  • Natural Dog Grooming Gift Set by EO from Andie's Sharing the Savings. Cricket doesn't like baths, but I like it when she smells good! ($28 value)
Finally, I won $100 to Karen Kane from Susan's Disney Family. I could really use a nice new outfit for the holidays, so I was very happy with this win. Thank you, Susan!

I hope everyone is having as much good luck as I am this week. If not, keep trying! You never know when your luck might turn around.

**CLOSED**My Memories Suite Digital Scrapbooking Software Review and Giveaway (11/30)

Years ago, I thought it would be fun to try scrapbooking. I envisioned putting together this beautiful book full of great pictures that would preserve my fondest memories for years to come. Well, little did I know that scrapbooking can actually be kind of a pain. It's not that easy to put together a scrapbook that actually looks good- it takes a lot of effort, and it can be expensive, too. For a slacker like me, it was just too much trouble. After fiddling around for a few days, I put away my supplies and forgot about scrapbooking.

When I found out about My Memories Suite Digital Scrapbooking Software, I felt that old creative energy welling up again. However, I was a bit doubtful-  would I get frustrated with this as quickly as I did with traditional scrapbooking? The answer was no! I quickly figured out how to use the software, and in no time I had created a cute page showcasing my pets. Take a look:

Not too shabby! I had fun playing around with the software, and I'm looking forward to actually doing something with the countless other digital photos that have been doing nothing but taking up space on my hard drive.

My Memories Suite  is easy enough for a beginner to use, but powerful enough to satisfy experienced scrapbookers as well.  This top rated software offers powerful design tools, a user-friendly interface, and multiple sharing options. Here are a few of the things that you can do with My Memories:
  • Build pages from scratch or use a professionally designed template
  • Enhance your scrapbook with music, narration, and video
  • Create your own word art with effects like bevel, emboss, warping, and more
  • Layer multiple background papers
  • Duplicate and mirror your pages easily
  • Create photobooks, calendars, and cards
  • Turn your scrapbook into a movie to watch on a DVD or view on an iPod
My Memories Suite comes with a large collection of papers and embellishments, and there are even more goodies that you can download from their site! Some of their digital scrapbooking kits are free, and others cost a few dollars. Here are a few that caught my eye:

Autumn Rose (free)                 Harvest Kitchen Paper Pieces ($1.49)

I prefer digital scrapbooking to the traditional method for several reasons. First of all, there's no mess to worry about- when you're done, all you have to do is save your work and hit "x." Also, it's cheaper! Real paper and embellishments can only be used once, then you have to go out and buy more. Digital paper and embellishments can be used as many times as you want, at no additional cost. Another advantage to going digital is that it's more forgiving- mistakes can be undone with a click of a button. Decide that you don't like that background paper so much after all? You can change it in seconds, without moving any of your pictures. I could go on and on about the advantages of using this software, but I think you probably get the point: digital scrapbooking is simply an easier, less expensive, and more modern alternative.

Special Offer

My Memories has offered a special code just for my readers! When you purchase My Memories Suite v2, you can use this coupon code: STMMMS27110 and get a $10 discount off the purchase of the My Memories Suite Scrapbook Software plus a $10 coupon for the MyMemories.com store!

**Giveaway**
My Memories has generously offered a copy of their software (a $40 value) for me to give away to one of my readers! The software is a digital download, and it will work on the following platforms: Windows 7, Vista, XP, Mac OS X v10.4.11 or later.

This contest is open world wide, but the My Memories software is intended for use with English language computers. Only one person (age 18+) per household may enter. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited by law. Odds of winning depends upon the number of eligible entries received .Winner will be chosen via random.org and notified by email. The winner will have 48 hours to respond, and if they fail to do so a new winner will be chosen.

Mandatory Entry: Visit mymemories.com and leave a comment on this post telling me which of their digital scrapbooking kits is your favorite. This entry must be completed in order for you to be eligible to win. Please leave your email address with this comment so I'll be able to contact you if you win.

Weirder Than Marshmallows: Book Review + Special Offer

Weirder Than Marshmallows:
Essays and Observations by Dan Fogg
Compiled and Edited by Deborah Carney
Published by NightFire Publications

I like weird stuff. If something can be described as strange or bizarre, there's a good chance that I'll like it at least a little bit. So, when I read the description of Weirder Than Marshmallows- "Stories that are, like marshmallows, strange, mind boggling... hard to explain, impossible to ignore"- it appealed to me.

Weirder Than Marshmallows contains true stories and essays by the author, Dan Fogg. Most of the essays are humorous, but some are more serious and personal. Much of the humor is based on human stupidity. Fogg addresses topics such as seemingly unnecessary warning labels (i.e. "highly flammable!" on lighter fluid), technological malfunctions, and people who don't know the difference between "lose" and "loose"- that's a pet peeve of mine, so I can relate! The more serious essays deal with issues such as the aftermath of Columbine and the 2000 Presidential elections.

This book isn't perfect. For one thing, it's quite short- many of the chapters are only a page or two long. Also, the writing didn't seem very polished. I feel that the book could have benefited from some grammatical changes. Many sentences started with conjunctions (such as "and" or "but"), and while that isn't always a bad thing, I feel that it was done a bit too often and made the writing seem choppy or fragmented at times.

Fogg writes in sort of an informal, conversational style- I often felt more like I was reading a blog post or an email from a friend rather than a book. That type of style could be a good thing or not, depending on your personal preference.

As I read, I found myself becoming more interested in the story behind the book. From a few personal details in the essays and from the editors notes, I gathered that the author was a young man with a disability who felt driven to become a writer. Tragically, Dan Fogg died in his early 20's. His mother, knowing how badly Dan wanted to become a successful writer, gathered his essays, edited them, and had them published. This book serves as a tribute to an ambitious young writer who died much too soon.

Although Weirder Than Marshmallows has its flaws, it did touch me. Dan Fogg clearly loved writing, and he was striving to improve his style. He had potential, and his death was a tragedy.  After reading about Dan, I feel inspired to work on my own writing skills, maybe type up a few stories. So, I'm glad that I read this book. After all, it's easy to find a few cheap laughs, but it's not every day that I read something that actually motivates me.

If you want to know more about Weirder Than Marshmallows or its author, Dan Fogg, please visit NightFire Publications and the Weirder Than Marshmallows facebook page .

Special Offer
If you'd like to read Weirder Than Marshmallows by Dan Fogg, you can purchase the Kindle Edition for $7.99 on Amazon.com. As a special limited time offer, any of you who purchase the kindle edition can get a special Scentsy Pumpkin Marshmallow Scent Circle- all you have to do is forward your receipt to dc@nightfirepublications.com

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Look at What I Won!

I recently won a cool dog collar from Rachel's Reviews and Giveaways and Chloe's Collars, and I thought I'd show it off.

This is Cricket, modeling her new Retro Rover collar. It's hard to get a good pic of her because she's camera shy, but I think the collar is really cute and it suits her. If you're interested in having a cute, kitschy handmade collar or leash for your dog, check out Chloe's Collar on Etsy!  She has a lot of great ones- I had a hard time choosing mine because I liked so many of them.

Here's a bonus pic of Cricket wearing her headless horseman Halloween costume. We were going to have her sit on the porch with us while we hand out candy, but then I found out that I have to work while Trick or Treat is going on... blah. Maybe next year. She doesn't care much for the costume, but the cats sure do think it's interesting!

*CLOSED* Spooktacular Giveaway Hop: Win One of These Spooky Books! (US only, 2 winners, ends 10/31)

Hey slackers, welcome to the Spooktacular Giveaway Hop, hosted by I Am A Reader, Not a Writer and The Diary of a Bookworm. This is a huuuge giveaway hop- I'm somewhere around #334 on a list of 425. So, congrats on making it here if you started from the top of the list! You're probably kind of worn out, so I'll get down to business. I'm a big fan of the horror genre, and I've picked a few great (and spooky) reads out of my personal collection to give away to some lucky readers. Each title links to the book's Amazon page, so check that out if you want more info about any of them. If you want to see the many other blogs who are participating in this hop, there is a linky at the bottom of this post.

First, I have a hard cover copy of the Scary Stories Treasury by Alvin Schwartz, illustrated by Stephen Gammell. This very gently used book is appropriate for ages 9 and up, and contains all three of Scwartz's best selling scary story collections. Let me tell you, these stories used to freak me out when I was a kid- I think the warped illustrations had a lot to do with that. None of the stories are too gory or terrifying, but they're definitely creepy.
Next up, I have The Dead That Walk edited by Stephen Jones. This is a collection of short stories about- you guessed it- zombies. There are 24 short stories in the books, and from what I remember, some of them are quite good. Authors include Clive Barker, Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft, Joe Hill, and Richard Matheson. The book is a gently used paperback copy- it has a few dog eared pages, but that's about it.
I also have this Mass Market Paperback copy of Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane. This one's more mystery than horror, but it's pretty creepy. I liked this book a lot, although I was a bit disappointed by the movie. Lots of twists, turns, thrills, and chills. The front cover on this copy has a few creases and the corners are a bit worn.

This is So Close the Hand of Death by J.T. Ellison, and my paperback copy is an uncorrected proof. It's in pretty good shape. To be honest, I don't remember much about this thriller. It's about an FBI agent who is trying to hunt down a serial killer called the Pretender, who likes to imitate famous murderers such as the Boston Strangler, the Zodiac Killer, and Son of Sam. The Chicago Tribune recommends this book for "fans of intelligently written, intricately crafted thrillers."

Blind Spot by Nancy Bush is another thriller that I have no recollection of, but it looks appropriate for this giveaway. According to Publisher's Weekly, Blind Spot is "an eerie suspense novel woven with a compelling romance... the terrifying denouement will have readers riveted." This copy is a gently used mass market paperback.

Do all of those other books sound super tame to you? Maybe you'd like Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk. This is a novel made up of 23 "horrifying, hilarious, and stomach-churning stories." I must stress that this is not a book for the faint of heart or the easily offended.  One of these stories, "Guts," managed to gross me out pretty badly, and that's not an easy task. According to popular legend, loads of people passed out when Palahniuk read it aloud during a book tour. Nevertheless, I liked this book more than most other Palahniuk's novels. It has a neat glow in the dark cover, too! This copy is a gently used paperback

So, here's how this is gonna work. I will be picking two random winners at the end of this giveaway, and each winner will receive one of these six books. You will receive your first choice, unless you are the second winner and the first winner chose the book you wanted. In that case, you will receive your second choice. This giveaway is open only to US Residents ages 18+.  I will email the winner- either add luckyjd2k@gmail.com to your address book or make sure to check your spam folder after the giveaway ends so that you don't miss out!

Mandatory Entry
Simply comment on this post and tell me which books (of the six I listed) you would like to win! What are your top two picks? Please leave your email address in this entry so that I will be able to contact you if you win. This entry must be completed in order for you to be eligible to win!

Optional Bonus Entries
Each of these options is worth one bonus entry. You don't have to complete any of them, but if you do it will increase your chances of winning. You must leave a separate comment for each one that you choose to complete!
  1. Follow me publicly via GFC, and leave a comment letting me know that you do. The GFC widget is near the top of my right sidebar- if it isn't showing up, refresh the page.
  2. Follow me on Twitter @giveawaysetc, and leave a comment with your twitter name.
  3. "Like" the Slacker's Paradise Facebook page, and leave a comment with your Facebook name (first name and last initial would be fine).
  4. Be my friend on Facebook, and leave a comment with your Facebook name.
  5. Be my friend on Goodreads, and leave a comment with your Goodreads name.

Only US residents ages 18+ are eligible to win. Only one person per household may enter. The number of eligible entries received determines the odds of winning. I reserve the right to delete comments that do not comply with the rules. This giveaway ends at 11:59 PM EST on Oct. 31, 2011. Winners will be chosen via random.org, and notified by email by November 2nd. Winners must respond to the email within 48 hours, or I will choose a new winner. Winner will be required to give me his or her name and shipping information, and I will personally mail out the prizes. I cannot be held responsible for typographical errors in shipping information, or for items lost in the mail. This giveaway is not sponsored by or affiliated with Facebook or Twitter. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited by law.

What's Your Favorite Scary Movie?

Nothing gets me into the Halloween spirit like a good old fashioned horror movie. When I was a teenager, I must have watched just about every singe one available at the local Blockbuster. Remember when you had to actually go to a video store to rent a movie? Man, I feel old. Anyway, here are some of my favorites- if you find yourself jonesing for a fright, check one out.

He'll Always Be Zachary to Me
 1. Hocus Pocus: Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy star as sister witches in this 1993 Halloween comedy. I loved this one as a kid, and I still watch it once in a while. I was about to write a little about the plot and whatnot, but now I'm distracted because I just saw on IMDB that the cat/boy who I always thought was named Zachary Binx is actually Thackery Binx. What!? I couldn't believe it, so I went to Google and typed "Zachary Thackery Binx." The first result was a facebook page dedicated to this very issue. At least I'm not alone- 192 other people firmly believed that his name was Zachary. Ok, now back to the topic at hand. I recommend Hocus Pocus if you want a family friendly Halloween movie that's more funny than scary and/or you'd like to see Bette do a killer rendition of "I Put a Spell on You." Hocus Pocus is going to be on ABC family several times during the next few weeks, if you're interested in seeing it.

Groovy.
 2. The Evil Dead: A young and dashing Bruce Campbell stars as Ash in this early '80s cult classic. Here's a tip for all you campers: if you just happen to find a copy of the Necronomicon (complete with a recorded translation) laying around in your cabin, you should probably just leave it alone. Ash and his friends just had to play the tape and things didn't exactly pan out well for them, what with the demon possession and everything.  In spite of its low budget, Evil Dead delivers. It's gory, creepy, and pretty original as well. I also love the sequel/remake, Evil Dead II- in fact, I think I might prefer it. Evil Dead II mixes some humor in with the terror, and Ash is much more of a badass in II than he was in the original. I think I'll be viewing both of them this Halloween- luckily for me, the original is available on Netflix watch instant, and I'm pretty sure I have a copy of II around here somewhere.

They're coming to get you, Barbara!
 3. Night of the Living Dead: I know that zombies are kinda played out these days, but I still have a soft spot for the undead. George Romero directed this groundbreaking black and white horror film in 1968, and it's pretty much a must-see for any horror fan. Sure, Barbara's histrionics can get annoying, but NOTLD is still a thoroughly creepy movie. And that denouement? Dark! Romero usually likes to throw a little bit of social commentary into his films, which I enjoy. The next two films in the series, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead are both definitely worth watching as well. The more recent ones... not so much. NOTLD is available to watch instantly on Netflix, and I recommend it to any fan of the genre.

Watch your heads.
 4. Sleepy Hollow: You know the story: Ichabod Crane is sent to the town of  Sleepy Hollow to investigate some decapitations, there is a headless horseman running amok, et cetera. What really makes this movie a must-watch for me is the atmosphere and the acting. Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Christopher Walken with some sick pointy teeth.... what's not to like? While it isn't exactly the most terrifying movie ever, Sleepy Hollow is pretty spooky and perfect to watch while cuddled up with your special someone on Halloween.

Silencio...
5. Mulholland Drive: I wanted to put a David Lynch movie on the list because he's one of my favorite directors, and I'm going with this one because I think it's a little more accessible than some of his other films. Plus, it has a scene in it that freaks me out every single time. It involves a dumpster, and if you've seen this one before I bet you know what I'm talking about. I recommend Mulholland Drive for people who like weird, unconventional movies that take some analysis to figure out. If you liked Inception, you might like this. This isn't your typical horror movie- it's more of a mystery, I suppose. Although it isn't terribly scary, it fills me with a sense of dread at points. For example, the performance of Llorando at Club Silencio- what a great scene. If you watch Mulholland Drive and enjoy it, try some of Lynch's other films. Lost Highway, Inland Empire, and Blue Velvet are my other faves.

Well, those are my fave five. What do you plan on watching this Halloween? Any must-see horror flicks I should know about?

Giveaway(s) of the day: The Literary Giveaway Blog Hop

If you're a book lover like me, you won't want to miss the Literary Giveaway Blog Hop hosted by Leeswamme's blog. I love book giveaway hops, but most of them feature tons of romance, paranormal, young adult, or some combination thereof. Nothing wrong with that, but those particular genres aren't very appealing to me. I generally prefer books with a little more substance. That's why I was excited to see that this hop is fluff-free. No brooding were-boys, no finely sculpted vampires- we're talking real literature. Sound good to you? Hurry up and check it out, because these 53 giveaways will only be open until the 19th!

I've decided that I need to be more active about blogging, so I'm starting up a new feature- Giveaway of the Day. Each day, I'll post about a new giveaway that I think deserves a bit of attention. Now, knowing me and my aversion to effort, this might turn into more of a bi-weekly thing... but I'll try to do it every day. Promise.

Anyway, my first Giveaway of the Day is a $25 Gift Code to Edenfantasys from Gee Spot Reviews. You know about EdenFantasys.com, right? If not, check out my review. They have all kinds of great adult items, and there are plenty of things you could get for $25 or less. So, if you'd like a chance to win something fun for yourself, head on over and enter- it's a rafflecopter giveaway, so entering is a breeze.

I'll be hosting my own EdenFantasys giveaway later this month, so stay tuned!
